I was at dinner with my family the other evening and the conversation moved toward facebook. Being a fan of social networks and online discourse in general, you can easily imagine which side i came down on this particular debate. The other side had a common reaction to the medium; it was different from how their generation did it, so the popular service must have been hurtful, absurd, or strange. I can understand how people can superficially view online relationship extensions as diminished forms of the IRL (in real life) experience. Don’t knock it till you try it though. And it seems most people are; the fastest growing segment of facebook is older (middle age) users.

Composite of a Series of Images Taken From Space Aboard the Space Station
This is a composite of a series of images photographed from a mounted camera on the Earth-orbiting International Space Station, from approximately 240 miles above Earth. Expedition 31 Flight Engineer Don Pettit said of the about photographic techniques used to achieve the images: "My star trail images are made by taking a time exposure of about 10 to 15 minutes. However, with modern digital cameras, 30 seconds is about the longest exposure possible, due to electronic detector noise effectively snowing out the image. To achieve the longer exposures I do what many amateur astronomers do. I take multiple 30-second exposures, then ‘stack’ them using imaging software, thus producing the longer exposure."
