Baseball Math
by Eric on Jul.28, 2009, under Science Life
Just like the fearless founder of this blog I am a huge Mets fan. I love baseball, and recently I’ve been absolutely awed at the advances being made in quantitating every aspect of the game. High-tech cameras in ball parks have enabled detailed measurements of every pitch. Not only can you measure pitch speed, but also location and flight path. You can follow horizontal and vertical movement of the ball from the pitcher’s hand to the catcher’s glove. The technology that does this is called PitchFX, and if you watch baseball on TV you may be familiar with some of the graphics that use it. But I am not the only person who finds it most useful for analyzing pitcher’s performances.

star trek and baseball
by Greg on Apr.20, 2009, under Science Life

It’s a long argument over two clips, but to understand it, pay attention to the black actor, Captain Sisko, as he describes to an alien race what it means to be corporal beings. This is also related to my prior post, NY Times: the sabermetric edge in baseball.

Mets win! and the science of baseball
by Greg on Apr.06, 2009, under Science Life
Nice win to start the season. Even though the bats did not come through enough, Murphy demonstrated he has the tools, and the bullpen showed how different it was from last year. Let’s celebrate!….today. The world science fair, which is affiliated with super-physicist Brian Greene, visited the Mets last year, and discussed something that isn’t spoken about enough (especially on sports radio), the science of baseball:
