ART: Today, amidst Lower Manhattan’s hustle and bustle, a temporary landscape will grow from the concrete (pictured at left). “A Clearing in the Streets, designed by Julie Farris and Sarah Wayland-Smith, is a ten-sided plywood structure that houses a small meadow, fifteen feet in diameter, offset by a panoramic interior mural of a vast blue sky. Eight-inch gaps spaced throughout the structure permit controlled visual access to the enclosed landscape. The constructed design and limited viewing opportunities magnify the natural cyclical processes of the ecology that, over a four month period, will evolve from seeds and seedlings to a lush meadow of flowering native plants and grasses.”

FILM: MoMA hosts a midday screening of Andy Warhol’s Lonesome Cowboys today. The late ’60s Western comedy/drama was shot on location in Tucson, Arizona. “This small town’s population consists of a transvestite sheriff, a rich lady rancher named Ramona Alvarez, her male nurse who expertly dances the twist, and five lonesome cowboys who fixate on their hair, practice ballet on a hitching post, engage in amorous activities, and discuss the loneliness that makes them ‘love themselves more than anyone else.’”

DISCUSSION: LES Stories presents Disappearing Downtown tonight. Host by H.R. Britton welcomes writers Albert Stern and Jason Wachtelhausen and musician Chris Lowe to discuss the topic at hand. “Every day a business closes its doors in New York City. Neighborhood figures die, artists move away. New shops move in and become fixtures. New generations make their mark. But for those who ‘remember when,’ reminiscing about old New York is half the fun of living here. Joining us at this popular storytelling series are four performers who spin yarns of downtown life as it used to be. As always, the public is welcome to share their three-minute stories.”

THEATER: Did you know that the riveting revival of Thorton Wilder’s Our Town that opened back in the beginning of March is still running? We were reminded of this when we saw director David Cromer, who also performs in the play as the Stage Manager, bound up onstage last week to accept another well-deserved OBIE for the production, which remains faithful to Wilder’s intriguing blend of naturalism and formal deconstruction, while also eschewing the hokey, Norman Rockwell sentimentality that’s de rigueur for amateur productions. It’s an emotionally resonant, refreshing interpretation that stayed with us long after the final, evocative blackout; read our full review here.
