In 1959 C.P. Snow gave a pivotal lecture focused on what he saw as a serious divide between the sciences and the humanities. As a researcher and creative writer he had a unique perspective on the problem and its impact on society at large.
Now, 50 years later, the New York Academy of Sciences has organized a full-day symposium to examine whether or not the divide still exists and how it affects contemporary society. The day will feature keynotes by Pulitzer Prize winner E.O. Wilson, former Congressman John Edward Porter, and Segway inventor and entrepreneur Dean Kamen, as well as panel discussions on politics, education, media, and the history surrounding the two cultures debate. Other speakers include Kenneth Miller, Professor of Biology, Brown University; Lawrence Krauss, Foundation Professor in the School of Earth and Space Exploration, Arizona State University; Ira Flatow, Executive Producer and host, NPR’s Science Friday; Paula Apsell, Executive Producer of NOVA and Director of WGBH Science Unit; Shawn Otto, Co-founder and CEO, Science Debate 2008; Francesca Grifo, Senior Scientist and Director, Scientific Integrity Program, Union of Concerned Scientists; as well as Chris Mooney & Sheril Kirshenbaum, co-authorsUnscientific America: How Scientific Illiteracy Threatens Our Future, among many others.
