ART: There’s a John Waters exhibit worth checking out at the Marianne Boesky Gallery. Pictured is just one of the many pieces, titled Children Who Smoke. The exhibit itself is called Rear Projection, “a movie term for the process in which a foreground action is combined with a background action filmed earlier to give the impression the actors are in the location for the background scene when they are, in fact, filmed inside a studio.”
Running through May 2nd // Marianne Boesky Gallery [509 West 24th St]
MUSIC: Drink Up Buttercup is an undeniabley cute name for a band, and their sound is just as adorable and nostalgic. Give a listen here, and check them out at Bruar Falls tonight (the new venue in Williamsburg).
8 p.m. // Bruar Falls [245 Grand St, Williamsburg] // $TBA
THEATER: Big Ben Brantley at the Times adores the “crackling” new revival of Friedrich Schiller’s 1800 play Mary Stuart, in from London from the acclaimed Donmar Warehouse. A political thriller of sorts, the play dramatizes the turbulent relationship between England’s Elizabeth I and her cousin, Mary Queen of Scots, Elizabeth’s rival to the throne. Brantley raves, “Mary Stuart has a fierce timelessness in its depiction of political power games and the roles played—then as now—by charisma, duplicity, self-editing and what has come to be known as spin. It is also one of the most unsettling studies I know of the captivity in which heads of state are condemned to live. (Note to Michelle and Barack Obama: See this immediately.)”
8 p.m. // Broadhurst Theatre [235 W 44th St] // Tickets
