Gothamlist April 20th

by on Apr.20, 2009, under Science Event

This may be quite possibly the most surprising April 20th event listing, considering recent news on a certain plant. It would seem that gothamist tried to avoid said subject, but what do i know :)

MOVIE: As part of their Mike Nichols retrospective, MoMA will screen two of the director’s films tonight. First up is the 1986 flick Heartburn with Meryl Streep, Jack Nicholson and Jeff Daniels. Later on in the evening catch the 1990 film Postcards from the Edge, also starring Meryl Streep, along with Shirley MacLaine, Dennis Quaid and Gene Hackman.

4:30 and 8 p.m. // MoMA [11 53rd St] // Tickets

EVENT: Tonight (Le) Poisson Rouge presents The Un-Silent Film Festival, featuring new and classic silent films brought to life with live music. “The feature presentation, one of the true masterpieces of the silent era, Carl Theodor Dreyer’s The Passion of Joan of Arc, will be accompanied live by John Pickford Richards on the viola. The evening will close with a screening of the universally loved Buster Keaton classic, The General, one of AFI’s top 20 films of all-time.”

7 p.m. // (Le) Poisson Rouge [158 Bleecker St] // Free

MUSIC: Did you pick up some nice vinyl at Record Store Day this weekend? Bring it over to the Bell House for Monday Night Vinyl Club, and you can help Brett from The Mugs spin some tunes in the front lounge. Meanwhile, the lineup in the live room has got Aeroplane Pageant, Red Orange Morning and Frances for just 5 bucks (and free beer for the 1st hour).

8 p.m. // The Bell House [149 7th St, Gowanus]

THEATER: The gearheads down at Three Legged Dog are rightly esteemed for their impressive technological chops—this is the place that, among other things, has been exploiting the 3D holographic Eyeliner imagery to great effect in shows like Fire Island. Their new production, in security, is still in previews, so while there are no reviews yet, you can check it out tonight for just two bucks! It’s described as “a capriciously funny glimpse into the brain of Dr. Lona Waverton, surgeon and endearing control freak, as reality and fantasy collide on the eve of her wedding. A play with one live actor, six video characters and a language tape.”

8 p.m. // 3LD Art & Technology Center [80 Greenwich St] // $2
