MUSIC: The Tallest Man On Earth (partially pictured) is at Union Hall tonight. No, it’s not a Coney Island freakshow oddity, it’s Sweden’s folkie Kristian Matsson. Before you check out the troubadour live (and you should), check out his performance in this new Take Away Show (shot in NYC). Tomorrow night he’s at Bowery Ballroom.
7:30 p.m. // Union Hall [702 Union St, Brooklyn] // $13
EXHIBIT: Transit nerds unite! To commemorate the Long Island Rail Road’s 175th anniversary, the New York Transit Museum in Brooklyn Heights is presenting a new exhibition (running through September) called “The Route of the Dashing Commuter: The Long Island Rail Road at 175.” The exhibit will examine the transition of Long Island from an idyllic farming community to the suburb we now know it as. Expect vintage photographs, maps, illustrations and other assorted objects. More details here.
Various times // New York Transit Museum [Boerum Pl & Schermerhorn St, Brooklyn] // $5
EVENT: The New York Public Library and Bookforum have teamed up to present the Cultural Obituaries lecture series. “Now that markets have proven a flawed index of our economic well being, our cultural life needs to look beyond the pat certainties of laissez faire ideology.” Tonight Walter Benn Michaels is joined by David Simon, creator of The Wire, and Susan Straight, author of Highwire Moon, join Michaels and novelist-critic Dale Peck to discuss the social vision of contemporary storytelling.
7 p.m. // New York Public Library [455 5th Ave] // $25
THEATER: Exit the King, Eugene Ionesco’s rarely performed gem has been restored to all its haunting, hilarious glory in a new production starring Geoffrey Rush, who also co-translated this version. The fourth wall-shattering play about a dissolute old king who has just ninety minutes to live has been brought to Broadway with a stellar ensemble, which includes an incisive Susan Sarandon as the king’s disgruntled wife; Emmy-winning Lauren Ambrose as his younger, second wife; the scene-stealing Tony-winner Andrea Martin (SCTV) as the king’s servant; William Sadler as the devilish doctor; and Brian Hutchinson as the doltish castle guard. It’s a testament to the cast’s uniformly inspired performances that they hold their own against Rush, who seems to be having the time of his life in the title role. Between this, reasons to be pretty, and God of Carnage, there’s suddenly an abundance of must-see straight plays on Broadway at the moment.
7 p.m. // Barrymore Theatre [243 W 47th St] // Tickets
