It’s a holiday weekend, and i will be celebrating my haitian catholic heritage by trying to find a balance between my personal beliefs and not ruining my relatives enjoyment of this important tradition. I don’t wish that on anyone, so go out and have some fun! (courtesy of the gothamist):

A little 19th century chapel in Fort Greene (location to be given at time of RSVP) is hosting “The Wedding of Winkel and Balktick.” The renegade wedding party will include brass bands, eight-tier-cakes and much more. THEATER: The far out new show Red Fly/Blue Bottle uses every effect in the multimedia toolbox to blow your mind. Lavish sound design? Check. Video art? Check. Live music? Check again, and also check the indie cred; Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley calls it “new music theater for the 21st Century—an ingenious fusion of image, music, and text.” Staged as a concert, the loose narrative concerns a “young woman who discovers her companion’s deployment to a secret war, and the steps she takes to make sense of his absence.” But really, it’s all about losing yourself in the weird, enveloping atmosphere. SYMPOSIUM: Literary magazine n+1 presents an afternoon panel, symposium and historical investigation titled “What Was the Hipster?” Experts Mark Greif (n+1), Jace Clayton (dj/Rupture), Christian Lorentzen (Harper’s) and more will be on hand, attempting to identify just who the turn-of-the-century hipster was. “Who is free enough of the hipster taint to write the hipster’s history without contempt or nostalgia? Why do we declare the hipster moment over–that, in fact, it had ended by 2003–when the hipster’s “global brand” has just reached its apotheosis?”

THEATER: We spoke with actress Marin Ireland yesterday for a forthcoming interview, and since we’re still glowing, here’s a reminder that you need to see reasons to be pretty, Neil LaBute’s Broadway debut. The funny and surprisingly heartbreaking play premiered Off Broadway last year, and LaBute’s tightened it considerably since then, bringing greater tenderness and focus to his story about a relationship that smashes apart over a single, callous word. Each member of the four actor ensemble is brilliant, but we’ve been gaga for Ireland ever since Beebo Brinker Chronicles, and she’s sublime in this. FILM: This Saturday (and next) is the 3rd annual Food for Thought Film Festival, “a showcase of films about our life sustaining resources: Food and Water. The program will be showcasing four feature length films, three short films, guest speakers, and filmmakers. This year focuses on several crucial issues: access to clean food and water; local and sustainable agriculture; and the effects of policy on small American farmers.” Get more details here.
