PICTURE PARTY: The LVHRD folks are hosting their 3rd annual PHTHRD. “For the past two years PHTHRD was a live photography competition where rival shutterbugs faced off on a secret brief revealed simultaneously to the competitors and audience. This year, we’re asking you to bring your camera (video or still). Instead of photog vs. photog, it’s all of us against the world. Bring a camera, so we can set the record for the world’s most photographed party.” A Flickr set will be created, naturally, and the Universal Record Database will certify the record. Plus: free Dewars and Brooklyn Brewery beer (be sure to use the code at checkout).
8 p.m. // TBA, Williamsburg // $20, use promo code “thehappycorp”
GAMES: Fancy yourself a modern-day pinball wizard? Tonight 3rd Ward hosts “Return of the Wizard: A Video Game Challenge” which will pit you and your friends against each other in high-stakes classic competition projected onto 10-by-10-foot screens. Deejays, ice-cold beers and cash prizes are all promised. Might be a little bit cooler if they had Pitfall on Atari, but this month they’re offering up Mario Kart on Nintendo 64.
7 p.m. to midnight // 3rd Ward [195 Morgan, Brooklyn] // Free, $5 to compete
CITY POLITICS: The race for the Public Advocate’s office is on and four Democratic candidates are speaking at a forum at CUNY Law School, presented by the CUNY Law Democrats and New York Democratic Law Students Council. The NYC Public Advocate’s seat is the only elected ombudsman office in the country–and it’s also the first in the line of succession to the mayoralty. Tonight, you can hear from candidates Councilman Bill de Blasio, Councilman Eric Gioia, Mark Green, and Norman Siegel during a Q&A moderated by NY Times Metro Desk Political Editor Carolyn Ryan.
7:00 p.m. // CUNY Law School auditorium [65-21 Main Street, Flushing] // Free w/RSVP (details)
THEATER: Jason Craig, who wrote and stars in the multidisciplinary rock/theater show Beowulf: A Thousand Years of Baggage, tells the Times he settled on the classic medieval epic Beowulf as his source material purely by chance: “I just saw it on my bookshelf. But I had never read it and wasn’t particularly interested in warriors or that kind of thing. Not my bag.” Yet it certainly seems to have become his bag; the show, which premiered in Berkeley, California last year, was acclaimed as “fucking awesome” by the East Bay Express, and topped the ten best lists of most local papers. The work of raucous, genre-defying innovators Banana, Bag and Bodice, the production premieres in NYC tonight, and is “pay-what-you-can” for this performance only. Be aware the company does have a considerable following, so you’d be wise to show up early with your loose change.
8 p.m. // Abrons Arts Center [466 Grand St] // Pay What You Can; First Come, First Served
MUSIC: Tonight Joe’s Pub welcomes Julian Lage, who began playing guitar professionally at the age of 5, and soon after was performing onstage with Santana and studying with David Grisman. These days he is finishing school at Berklee, has just released his album EmArcy and continues working on his compositions and his own band. With praise from the likes of Herbie Hancock and Bela Fleck, he’s probably worth checking out.
9:30 p.m. // Joe’s Pub [425 Lafayette St] // $20
